Whitniffic Whatnots

So, I'm patiently awaiting the arrival of the batting for my current quilting projects. I ordered it on the 3rd from Joann.com, since they had this crazy deal going, but with the holiday it seems like it's taking forever to arrive! I ordered two crib-size rolls of Warm & Plush batting ($4.99 per roll!) for the baby quilts ( Jelly Roll Jam and Disappearing 9-Patch ), and two packages of craft-sized 100% recycled plastic Evergreen batting ($3.49 per pack!) for tote bags... which I have cut and prepped to match each baby quilt! Tote bags are one of my favorite things to make... and I know I shared a few pictures of the process a while back, but I figured I'd do it again just for fun! I started with the 9-patch one. Happy Fourth of July! Apparently I get all festive and stuff when I have a couple days off of work. I decided that, since I'd be wearing crazy American flag leggings today for the 4th of July, Howie needed something cute to wear too so he could look all sorts of adorable while we're checking out the festivities. I whipped up a star-spangled fireworks bandana that I think makes him sparkle. I know... I know. Bandanas are like the simplest thing to make EVER. But most people just take a pinking shears and cut out a triangle, so eventually the bandana gets all raggedy and has to be tossed. Don't fret though- the little bit of extra effort really makes this bandana look finished and high-quality. And it's 2-sided. I started out with some patriotic fabric from JoAnn. It was half off yesterday, so I got it for $4 per yard (sooo... $2 for half a yard). I ended up buying the rest of the bolt as well, since there was only 27 inches left, so it was also half off again....

The pre-cut obsession continues... with jelly rolls this time. I've got another baby shower to attend in August, and they're waiting to find out the baby's gender until it's born. I think that's a super fun idea, but it makes it hard to shop! I decided I wanted to try out this Jelly Roll Jam quilt pattern by Fat Quarter Shop on YouTube, since it looks so quick and simple. Then I had to find a gender-neutral jelly roll! I chose a Kaffe Fassett Collective "Tides" roll by Rowan Fabrics (and I think I got the very last one! It's "sold out forever").  I think purple, green and blue can work for either boys or girls... although I'm guessing that it's a girl. I also got a yard of some coordinating Kaffe Fassett " green circles " backing, which is 108" wide and SO SOFT! A yard is plenty... I took a little dip into the traditional quilting realm this past with a simple disappearing nine patch quilt top. I've been slightly obsessed with precuts lately- more specifically charm packs. SO. MANY. SQUARES! I've spent way too much money (accidentally) online... the Missouri Star Quilt Company is to blame this time! They have such a great selection of charm packs, jelly rolls, layer cakes, etc. and it makes it so hard for me to just pick one (or two or three). Oddly enough, I ended up cutting yardage into 5" squares for this project. Charm packs are amazing, but I really wanted a specific color scheme and consistent pattern for this baby quilt instead of the scrappy look I'd get from a charm pack. I originally planned to pick up 9 fat quarters (which would give me 108 squares), but I found a beautiful floral print with butterflies, passport stamps and French script that just reminded me of the mama of the baby I'm making it for.
